...will forever be known to me as the day my 4-year-old daughter changed the toilet paper roll for the first time ALL BY HERSELF without me knowing she used it up!!! wow. that's a biggie. i want you to think back to your roommates from college...wouldn't you have liked to have tay around?! (i can think of a few times i was left high and dry.) she definitely wouldn't have left you in a bind! she's growing up guys! {sniffling & delicately dabbing the corners of my eyes with a linen handkerchief}

how teachers live it up @ conferences

lesli (1st grade teacher/good friend/workshop buddy) and i represented our school at the dfw literacy summit conference on monday and tuesday. our district hosted this nifty event, where tons of teachers from all over come to learn more about recent research, effective strategies and fun ideas for the classroom from published and well known educators. before you automatically think, "oh wow, a bunch of teachers together...must be all milk and cookies and leave it to beaver-y", read on! besides learning some valuable research information & techniques to help me be a better teacher (yeah, ok...it's a little "we are the world" right there...BUT), the highlight of the whole 2 day conference was witnessing lesli participate in a sing-off contest at the end of day one:yup. that's lesli, singing totally sober in front of like 40 people we don't know (sorry the picture's blurry-i took it with my cell phone). when we learned of the contest and prizes (winner took a $1000 certificate for a bedroom makeover from some fancy company), lesli signed right up. me? no way. those who know me know that i'm usually not the first to shy away from a microphone (used to emcee pep rallies, parades through town and various programs in high school). however, i always make it known to whoever i'm with that if there's going to be karaoke, i need alcohol to prepare myself & everyone around me for my performance. now seeing as this was a school-related event, of course we couldn't do that! (although it was playfully suggested by the keynote speaker, the infamous tim rasinski) anyhow, there were several contestants, many of whom you could tell that singing was their "thing". never the less, lesli ROCKED! i was so impressed with her courage and well, GUTS, for going out there to sing in front of all those *strangers*, mostly from other districts. here's to you, my brave workshop buddy! our adventures sure are fun. i wonder what'll be in store for us at the next workshop don sends us to?! shh, i don't think our principal knows what really goes on at these things!!!

dentist lovers, please stand up

any dentist-going lovers out there? definitely not me. i have that right up there with going to the gynecologist. have always hated going. but, since moving to dallas i have had the good fortune of getting into the office of dr. shannon. he's like the best dentist i have ever had. so gentle, "non-lectury". his hygienist doesn't believe in the hard core "scrapage" technique either (totally complimented her on her gentleness!), a definite plus seeing as i don't go every 6 months like i should. the last time i was at the dentist was when i was about 7 months pregnant with taylor. i had had a small cavity then, but he replied, "since it's small and you're in your delicate state, i'll let you walk. but we need to take care of that after you have your baby." well, you can guess that i didn't go back in. even though dr. shannon is "all that", he's still a dentist. so i finally went in for an exam and cleaning on wednesday. it had been like 4 years. i braced myself for lectures about not getting my cleanings on a regular basis and flossing, but other than one reference to my long absence from the hygienist and then later from dr. shannon when describing the state of my mouth, that was it. actually, both said that the condition of my gums and teeth were surprisingly good considering it had been so long. naturally there was build up and i still had that cavity. am i lucky or what? i was expecting way worse news! needless to say, i have my follow-up appointment next week and then my mouth will be healthy again. next up: the gynecologist! blah!!! {shudders}

what's up?! from under a rock

where the *bleep* have i been?! it took all the media hype about the beckhams arriving in the states last week for me to pause & notice him:
oh hello jonelle. wake up from the coma. {fanning myself silly: some ladies dig men in uniform, how he's dressed does it for me-well actually i tad prefer guys dressed in a button down shirt without a tie, jacket and nice jeans or slacks (hey maybe that's one of the reasons i watch burn notice. michael dresses this very way!). but still, you cannot deny his great ensemble} okay, you've (and now soccer) got my attention, david!!!

try this one...

"You are eight feet tall. Your boobs are perfect. Your hair is down to there. If I was you I would just walk around naked all the time. I wouldn’t have a job, I wouldn’t have any skills, I wouldn’t even know how to read. I would just be…naked."

which show and who said it to who? {grinning}

game

so meredith and i have started this very random game where we say a quote from a tv show or movie and the other has to guess where it's from and who said it. thought it would be fun to see who watched the same stuff as me...which is lots-i *love* tv and movies...{doin' the ernie-as in bert & ernie-laugh}

let's try one of my absolute faves from a popular tv show: a character responds to his friend's "dilemma" of having 2 women attracted to him. he mocks his friend and says:

"oh, two girls love me. they're both gorgeous and sexy. my wallet's too small for my 50s and my diamond shoes are too tight!!!"

which show and who said it??!?!?!! and don't cheat by googling it either!!!

surfing music

from the movie, surf's up. i hear this and suddenly i picture myself on the beach at home. {shaka!} \m/

1/2 over

so my summer vacation has reached the halfway mark. what have i accomplished? well, been spending most of my energy dealing with the recent changes in my life-the emotional aspect, the logistics. i know i've been all vague about this since my "peace and quiet" post. i just don't wanna get into specifics on here. i am willing to share, though, that i never thought things were going to play out the way they have and have tried everything i know to "get back on track". but, the bottom line is that no matter how much you want something, you only have control over yourself.

of course i've been spending mega-quality time with tay doing many things (movies, swimming, arts and crafts, playdates, playing barbies, etc)! i have also gotten quite a few pages done in taylor's disney world scrapbook. i am rockin' and rollin'! worked on some stuff for school. summer vacation's always a good time to tweak, improve or create things for the classroom/curriculum. always thinking of ways to make my classroom run more efficiently, be more productive and make things "funner" for the kids. (i know, i know...what's up with the grammar?!?!) it's also been a movie-goin' kind of summer. saw "license to wed" on thursday-it had its funny parts. finished my first book of the summer this morning @ 2am. it's one of cara lockwood's newer books, i did (but i wouldn't now). it's a sequel to her first one, i do (but i don't). seriously found myself cracking up in the last few pages. one of the secondary characters was a goofball and had some awesome lines. i kept picturing the dude (seth) from the movie "knocked up". started a new book but having trouble sticking with it. i've put it down a couple of times now...maybe if i just get over the little hump...

oh, so here's something i totally wanted to share. started watching the tv show burn notice on usa. the first couple of times i saw the promos for it i was like, "naaah...don't think so" but then the song from promo haunted me and i found myself tuning into the pilot. glad i did. it's a pretty good show. he's so slick, makes you wanna become a spy just to be able to turn a cheap cell phone into a listening device. genius. love love *love* the voice-overs and the humor. you should try to catch it if you can. here's the song from the promo that had me humming it for several days!
