pompeii

the main square with vesuvius in the background

one of the many street fountains. each had a different design. our guide said it served as a location marker. for example:

me: hey, i'm having a kickback @ my house after work. you coming?
friend: sure, after i do my gymnastics though. where do you live?
me: 3 doors down from the fountain with the ox on it.
friend: oooh, that's a swanky street...
me: yup, that's how i roll.
friend: cool, i'm down.

the streets of pompeii. check out the crosswalk ahead.

cast of a person. people were found in similar positions: either praying or covering their faces because they were beginning to suffocate.

old school pizza place with oven and mills.

men's sauna room

detailed decor on the wall. these little guys went all the way around the room like crown molding does.

balcony of a brothel. the ladies would lure their clients in by hanging out up there.

bar. in foreground, wine portals. in background: private rooms for *other activities*. one thing i learned was that the citizens and visitors of pompeii sure were horn dogs!

positano, italy

at the lookout of positano on the amalfi coast in italy. it was crazy while we were there...all of a sudden we heard multiple explosions! i guess they were working on clearing part of the mountain for something? who knows...but it was very interesting. (oh hey, that's another way we could've died in italy: landslide! i forgot about that one)

this was absolutely hilarious! laura (aka, my bathroom buddy) and i ran into this in a fancy hotel next to the lookout of positano. we started cracking up when we saw this on the door! although it was funny, we were relieved to know without a doubt, which was the ladies' room!

walking down to positano. see how narrow the streets are and how the pedestrians and cars have to totally share the road? scary stuff sometimes...

church

inside that church

one of the many paintings along the walls of the church. it was beautiful.

mere and me standing in the mediterranean! yay!

isn't it crazy how the buildings are practically stacked on top of each other as you go up the cliff?

hawaii? no, sicily!

there were many moments during our stay in sicily in which i felt like i was at home (hawaii). check it out:

mauna kea? no, mount etna!

oooh, bougainvillea. am i in kona? nope, taormina!

if it weren't for the "europe" in the web address, who would've known this was on a billboard in sicily?

lava flow from kilauea? nuh uh...mount etna.

ooooh, he's picking opihi! oh wait...i don't know *what* that is.

even all the hibiscus faked me out! :)

ahhh, fear not jonelle, you'll *really* be home in 16 days. {grinning}

the "lost" photos (randomness)

how many americans does it take to use an atm their first day in rome? (in our defense, the initial screen was *completely* in italian)

yeah, it's mine.

thank god the converter works, must charge iPod!!!

you can never escape the internet, not when you have a few minutes while waiting for the rest of the girls to come down to the lobby to go get dinner.

i forgot why we took this picture. something about the elevator buttons and the floors...

earpiece? secret service, baby.

high mortality in italy

so i started this list our first day in rome. the girls thought it was funny and then laura and mere began to enthusiastically contribute to it throughout the trip. it's the "ways we could've died in italy" list. (ok, i've been told i can be dark sometimes). oh come on, despite what the b52's say, everyone can't be "shiny happy people" 24/7!) anyways, here's what we came up with:

1. heat exhaustion-we did A LOT of walking through all the cities and archaeological sites in very humid and warm weather (averaging in the mid 90's everyday).

2. asphyxiation-we were all crammed in this little transporter bus from the boat charter to the hotel. people were pressed up against one another, recycling each other's air (there was no air conditioning and all the windows were closed), sweaty arms and legs touching...all 38 of us in one of those short airport shuttle buses. it was like we were replacing the clown and little car act at the circus. "how many teachers can you squeeze into a van?" the crazy thing they told us was that the capacity of the bus was 45. NO WAY. not unless people were on each other's laps!!!

3.getting run over by a car, vespa or bus-this seriously could have happened DAILY folks. i still shudder when i think of all the close calls! in a lot of the places, the people and cars have to share the road. just know that the united states is VERY accommodating to pedestrians.

4. 2nd hand smoke inhalation-lots of people smoke there...it's everywhere, they're often right next to you and difficult to avoid.

5. plunging to your death due to the bus going off the cliff in capri. the road was cliffside.

6. pool umbrella impalement-in sorrento, there was a storm brewing. as we were standing in the driveway of the hotel receiving directions from our tour guide, a pool umbrella from the 4th floor was blown up from its base and came flying down. when it missed us, laura and i shared a shocked look and a laugh.

7. falling off the chair lift in capri-ok, so technically we probably wouldn't have died because it wasn't high enough, but still, you'd get tossed around pretty well and get some pretty good fractures.

8. heart attack-geckos. freak. me. out. yes, yes....i know i'm from hawaii and they're everywhere there but i still don't like 'em. the geckos in italy scurried and jumped which in turn made me shiver like no one has ever shivered before. i had to establish a rule for the rest of the trip: do not point out the geckos to jonelle. i assured the girls that i would always be fully aware of the geckos' presence whenever i heard their feet go pitter patter and the leaves move when they ran into them.

9. shock from seeing too much anatomy-laura personally added this one. while in capri, i pointed out a nude man on the beach. laura was not amused.

10. head on collision with other vehicles-again, this happened almost daily. our bus driver, marco, was the absolute master. i totally felt safe. when i wasn't watching the other cars come toward us.

11.blunt force trauma-this would have happened upon entry into the cave of the blue grotto in capri. the opening was so small that only the little rowboat could fit through. what did this mean? all people had to frantically lay down while passing through and if you didn't get down in time, BAM! blunt force trauma, baby.

12. boat collision-again, in capri (boy, capri sure was a dangerous place, huh?). after arriving to the blue grotto site, we had to wait our turn for the rowboats to approach our charter. there were maybe 5-8 other charters there. at one point, one of the larger charter boats began drifting toward our boat. neither driver realized it until people on our boat began scurrying out of the way because they were about to be taken out by some pole that was sticking out from the front of the other boat. both drivers frantically got the boats moved in time, but people freaked on that one.

13. plunging to death from the funicular in taormina and on etna. again, probably wouldn't have died because the height was not significant enough, but still, if you landed on your head i'd say there was a good chance you'd end up in a coma.

but seriously...we had an *awesome* time!!! :)

rome/vatican city

i was so freakin' proud of myself. i took this our 1st morning there. about 8 of us woke up super early (jet-lagged and all), met in the lobby @ 6am and walked to piazza del popolo (15-20 min walk) to take some scenic pictures of rome. yes. this was taken before i had any coffee...which if you know me at all is quite the feat (despite what the time stamp says at the bottom of this post, i'm not a morning person. my internal clock is still messed up. better than yesterday, but still messed up!).
*canon zoom lens: 70-300mm

the infamous colosseum and arch of constantine. i know this is going to sound totally mental, but the whole time we were walking outside of it, i kept thinking in my head, "MAXIMUS! MAXIMUS!" (from the russell crowe movie, gladiator)

grandma and mom: these next 3 pics are especially for you!
mere and me in front of st. peter's basilica

inside

the view from the top of the dome overlooking st. peter's square. after most of our group went back to the hotel or to shop, a bunch of us girls decided to stay and climb to the top. it was magnificent. tragically painful, but magnificent. 320 steps AFTER the elevator takes you up 2-3 stories. the stairs just kept spiraling upward with seemingly no end in sight. it was narrow and closed in and when you're walking up with what seems like the rest of the world in a forced single-file line in upper 90 degree weather, it's very humid and sticky. there were times that i had to lean to one side because the stairs were next to the slanted dome wall!

at times, it was even more tightly spiraled than this. in one section toward the very top, instead of a railing in the center, there was just a rope hanging down! raiders of the lost arc, anyone?

workin' up a sweat...major cardio action here! and look, i'm still smiling! nah, actually it's because we were all joking about it coming down...

sleepless in dallas

yup....read that time stamp at the bottom, folks. unfortunately for me, my body's circadian rhythm's all jacked up and me thinks it's time to start the day IN ROME. i keep trying to have a serious conversation with myself about where i'm at but she just doesn't wanna listen.

uploaded all 1400 pictures yesterday...relived some moments while looking through the shots. such an awesome time! and yes, there's a *story*. {grins} but, that's for another day over a margarita with the girls. think i'm going to start my laundry...i mean, since i'm AWAKE and all.
